How to get your first tech job without a computer science degree

A CS degree helps, but it is not the only route. Build role-specific skills, visible projects, and interview confidence.

Choose a realistic entry role

Not every tech role has the same entry barrier. Full stack developer, QA tester, support engineer, data analyst, WordPress developer, Shopify developer, and technical writer can be more accessible than advanced AI research or systems engineering.

Your first tech job is not your final job. It is your entry point into the industry. Once inside, you can keep learning and move upward.

Build a proof stack

A proof stack means a set of visible assets that prove you can do the job. For development, build three projects: one landing page, one dashboard or CRUD app, and one API-connected app. For data, build dashboards with real datasets and explain business insights. For QA, write test cases and bug reports for real apps.

Your resume should point to these projects. Your LinkedIn should explain what you learned. Your GitHub or portfolio should be clean enough for a recruiter to inspect.

Apply where your background helps

If you come from BPO, product support and customer-facing SaaS roles may value your communication. If you come from commerce, analytics and ERP roles may value your business understanding. If you come from design, frontend and UI/UX may be natural bridges.

A non-CS background becomes weaker only when you fail to connect it to the role.

Prepare for interviews honestly

You do not need to pretend you know everything. You need to explain your projects, your learning path, and how you solve problems. Use mock interviews to practice speaking clearly, especially if you are switching from a non-technical role.
